Increase the Value of Your Home through Veneer Cabinets Refinishing

One of the main feature in a home is the kitchen cabinet. The right cabinetry can provide needed storage space, and add beauty to any kitchen. If your cabinets aren't as beautiful as they could be, you really should think about refinishing your veneer cabinets.

By refinishing, you can save yourself a great deal of money and add beauty and value to your kitchen without the need to replace the cabinets. Surprisingly, refinishing veneer cabinets is something that any homeowner can accomplish in the space of a few days. So if this sounds like something you'd like to try, then read on!

First of all the current finish should be removed. The best way to do this is with a gel-based paint and stain remover. Make sure you have eye protection and ample ventilation before doing this step, and always cover your kitchen flooring with a tarp or plastic sheeting. Apply the gel in a smooth, uniform coat and allow to sit for around 30 minutes. Then, wipe away and allow the cabinet to dry.

When you’ve made sure that the cabinet have dried completely, you’re ready for sanding. Start with a coarse grain, sanding in the direction of the wood graining. After a few sandings with a coarse grit paper, move on to a fine grit such as 220. After you feel your cabinets are sanded thoroughly, vacuum all excess grit away.

Sometimes you’ll find that there are uneven places, scratches or dents in the wood. To fix this, use a wood filler. Apply the wood filler to the areas where it's needed, and allow to dry. Then sand off excess wood filler. Next, it's time for the primer. Purchase a wood primer or make your own using a bit of stain and an oil based polyurethane.

Should you prefer a natural look for your cabinet, simply finish them off with three coats of clear, oil based polyurethane finish. However if you want a particular color, a stain is needed. Apply your stain in the direction of the wood grain with a soft cloth. Depending on the depth of color you desire, you may need up to three coats.

Well, I hope you agree that refinishing veneer cabinets is something any homeowner can do on their own. Of course, there are also many professional companies who can do the job for you, if DIY is not your cup of tea at the moment.
